What is a Web Application Firewall?

This additional complexity has also provided multiple openings for adversaries to attempt to breach and compromise sites in ways that even the most modern network firewall can’t keep up with. A Web Application Firewall (WAF) overcomes this issue by specifically inspecting the content that is being sent or received to your site, rather than just looking at layer 3-4 information. This then helps stop attacks such as SQL injection or cross-site scripting as the individual messages can be inspected and sanitised before being passed on to the back-end environment.
